New Opportunities for the Business Community as Boden Strengthens Its Host Nation Support

Today, the Municipality of Boden and Nordic Way Services are signing a memorandum of understanding regarding cooperation on host nation support, logistics, and civil-military cooperation. This collaboration could create new opportunities for local and regional companies in logistics, transportation, supply chain management, and other support functions.

Sweden’s membership in NATO places new demands on municipalities, government agencies, and the business community. For Sweden to be able to receive and support allied forces, transportation, logistics, supply, housing, and local coordination must function effectively in practice.

Through this letter of intent, the Municipality of Boden and Nordic Way Services aim to jointly develop approaches for organizing host country support in and around Boden. As a first step, the parties will conduct an assessment of resources, stakeholders, and structures that can contribute to future host country support.

The business community becomes part of the emergency preparedness efforts

As the need for transportation, logistics, supply, and other support functions grows, local and regional companies become an important part of the overall capacity. This collaboration will help identify the resources available in Boden and the region and how they can be mobilized when the need arises.

– For host country support to work in practice, local and regional resources must be mobilized and coordinated. Boden has a thriving business community, innovative spirit, and a geographic location that makes the municipality a natural place to develop new ways of working, says Johan Johansson, CEO of Bodens Kommunföretag.

Boden’s strategic importance has been further strengthened by Sweden’s role as the host nation for NATO’s Forward Land Forces in Finland, with the Swedish battalion battle group pre-positioned in Boden.

Experience in international logistics

Nordic Way Services brings expertise in strategic consulting, coordination, and logistics solutions related to the needs of the Total Defense. The company is owned by Wallenius Lines, part of the Soya Group, one of Sweden’s most financially strong family-owned business groups with extensive operations in international transportation and logistics. Nordic Way Services operates at the intersection of civilian resources, defense logistics, and operational coordination in the Nordic and Baltic regions.

– Sweden’s role as a NATO member country poses new practical challenges. Hosting and supporting allied forces is not just a matter of military plans, but of ensuring that transportation, logistics, suppliers, and local resources work together. “We look forward to working with Boden to develop approaches that strengthen our collective capabilities,” says Erik Nøklebye, Chairman of the Board at Nordic Way Services.

The letter of intent is not legally binding and does not entail any financial obligations at this stage. Any future assignments or collaborations will be governed by separate agreements in accordance with applicable laws and municipal procedures.
