New Initiative Aims to Strengthen the Gaming Industry in Northern Sweden

This fall, CreativeTech North will launch—a new project aimed at strengthening the conditions for the gaming industry and creative technology companies in northern Sweden. CDT at Luleå University of Technology is the project owner and is leading the effort, which is being carried out in collaboration with Skellefteå Science City, Boden Business Park, and the City of Umeå.

The project builds on previous initiatives in the region and aims to take the next step in developing the regional ecosystem for game development and creative technology companies. Through the project, the partners will, among other things, work to strengthen support for companies in the industry, develop the financing ecosystem, and create better conditions for growth.

The focus includes, among other things:
• developing long-term support structures for the gaming industry in northern Sweden
• enhancing investors’ and financiers’ understanding of the business models of gaming and creative technology companies
• increasing companies’ ability to attract capital
• strengthening the link between academia and industry
• contributing to a more sustainable, inclusive, and attractive industry.

– We are very pleased that CreativeTech North has been approved. Over the next three years, we will have the opportunity to strengthen the ecosystem surrounding creative technologies in northern Sweden and forge new, forward-looking partnerships between businesses, academia, and public sector actors. We’ll also have the opportunity to provide more talented individuals with better conditions to establish themselves and succeed in the gaming industry, which is a fast-growing, capital-intensive, and export-driven sector,” says Björn Hortell, project manager at Boden Game Incubator.

The project will run for three years and is funded by the European Regional Development Fund, Region Västerbotten, and Region Norrbotten. Co-funders include Luleå University of Technology, the Municipality of Skellefteå, Skellefteå Science City, Boden Business Park, and the Municipality of Umeå.
