Mats Berg’s decision to retire was announced in August 2024. Since then, the municipality has been preparing for the transition and at the same time reviewing how future business work can best be organized to meet the needs of a growing municipality in social transition.
On June 30, Mats Berg will leave his role as Head of Economic Affairs. Until the end of the year, he will remain in the organization as CEO of the municipal enterprises.
“This is a natural time for change. During the year, we have reviewed how we can develop the organization and create even better conditions for coordination and a long-term approach in the business area. A decision on the new structure will be communicated as soon as possible,” says Magnus Åkerlund, Municipal Manager in Boden.
Was head of municipality 2016-2023
Mats Berg has held several leading roles in the municipality of Boden. Between 2016 and 2023, he was the municipal manager. During some periods, he also held the responsibility of business manager in parallel. In 2022, he chose to leave the role of municipal manager to focus entirely on business development – with a particular focus on driving the work on the green societal transition.
“Mats has played a crucial role in the journey Boden is currently on. His strategic thinking, his ability to build trust and his perseverance have been absolutely crucial for us to be where we are today. I am grateful for the work he has done – and I really wish him more time with his family and grandchildren,” says Magnus Åkerlund.
“Of course there is a certain sadness”
The decision to step down has not been easy, but the business leader explains that the time is right.
“Of course, there is a certain sadness in leaving a role and a mission that I have been passionate about for so long, but it has also been challenging. I feel a great sense of pride in what we have achieved together – and I am full of confidence for the future. Boden is in a strong position,” says Mats Berg.
