The societal transformation in Boden is not only paving the way for new industries but also creating ripple effects for established businesses.\u00a0Architecture firm a och d<\/mark><\/a>\u00a0is a prime example of how companies can evolve by adapting to regional changes \u2013 even in industries currently facing national challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe analyzed the housing market in 2021 and noticed a decline. With eight of our team members working exclusively with residential projects, we realized change was necessary. By redirecting a significant part of our business toward the industrial sector, we\u2019ve secured employment while becoming part of the large-scale transformation happening in Boden and the rest of Norrbotten,\u201d says Camilla Sandstr\u00f6m, office manager at a och d\u2019s Boden branch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a och d made its decision, Stegra announced its plans to build the world\u2019s first full-scale green steel plant in Boden. Two years later, a och d recorded its best financial results to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSome may call it luck that our decision coincided with the surge of the green transition in this region, but I don\u2019t think we were the only ones making the same analysis. It\u2019s not just about seeing opportunities \u2013 it\u2019s about daring to act at the right time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Long-term work pays off<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The architecture firm has been active in Boden since 2014, gradually establishing a strong market presence. With framework agreements in place with Boden Municipality and the Swedish Fortifications Agency, the company has positioned itself as a key player in architecture and construction in the region. Over the years, they have worked on everything from preschools and public buildings to small-scale projects for local businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen we started, Boden was a relatively undeveloped market for architects. There was a tradition of letting builders handle design and material choices. We\u2019ve worked to lower the threshold for hiring an architect and to show that our role extends beyond aesthetics \u2013 it\u2019s about functionality, workflow, and long-term sustainability,\u201d says Camilla Sandstr\u00f6m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The firm\u2019s framework agreement with the Swedish Fortifications Agency includes the reconstruction of the historic Kanslihuset, which was damaged by fire in 2023.<\/em><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Recognizing that the industrial sector would grow alongside the green transition, the firm made a strategic decision to develop expertise and relationships within industrial architecture. They are now involved in major projects, including the redevelopment of Lule\u00e5\u2019s harbor and other large-scale industrial sites in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This shift has driven increased demand, leading the company to hire six new employees in the past six months. To accommodate growth, a och d has also relocated to larger premises on Kungsgatan in Boden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe designed our own office with room for expansion because we see continued positive development. We expect to grow to between twelve and fifteen employees here in the coming years,\u201d says Camilla Sandstr\u00f6m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another aspect of the expansion is the establishment of a dedicated construction and project management team. Previously, the firm had individuals working on project management, but they have now formed a specialized group to oversee projects from blueprint to completion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe see great value in offering a complete solution where we manage projects from start to finish. It creates a smoother process and greater security for clients while providing us with valuable feedback on our designs,\u201d says Camilla Sandstr\u00f6m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Positive future in Boden<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

With the rapid development in Boden, a and d see a bright future. They expect to grow further and see that the societal transition brings with it a range of ripple effects that provide opportunities for local businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe see strong demand for everything from small-scale workshops to commercial properties and housing that will support industrial development. Our strength lies in our local presence and broad expertise, allowing us to take on both small and large projects,\u201d says Camilla Sandstr\u00f6m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although a och d has made a strategic shift toward the industrial sector, residential projects remain a key part of their business. Rather than abandoning them, the firm sees diversification as a major strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe still take on residential projects, but we have diversified to avoid putting all our eggs in one basket. By working across industrial, residential, and public sector projects, we create a stable foundation and long-term sustainability for our company,\u201d says Camilla Sandstr\u00f6m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company shows how the green transition and the growth of Boden not only opens doors for new industries, but also creates great opportunities for local businesses that see the potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a och d is an architecture firm offering services in architecture, structural design, interior design, and construction project management. They work on projects ranging from residential and commercial properties to industrial developments.
