On 1 July 2011, the Electronic Communications Act (LEK) was amended. The Cookie Act, LEK Chapter 6 §18, is part of the EU directive The Revised E-Privacy Directive. The law aims to prevent Internet users from being tracked without their consent. This is done by prohibiting data from being stored on, or retrieved from, the user’s terminal equipment, such as a computer, mobile phone or tablet.

The law says: “Data may be stored in or retrieved from a subscriber’s or user’s terminal equipment only if the subscriber or user is provided with information about the purpose of the processing and consents to it. This does not preclude storage or access necessary for the transmission of an electronic message over an electronic communications network or necessary for the provision of a service expressly requested by the user or subscriber.”
